Belitz
The church of Belitz (Mecklenburg)
and the Birckholtz-Trumpet

In 1232 Belitz (in old documents also spelled „Beliz“, „Belitze“, „Beltz“, „Beelz“) was mentioned for the first time.

On the 4 of April 1232 Bischof Conrad von Camin granted the church of Polchow the tithe (the one-tenth tax) from Beelz. Originally Belitz used to be a farmers’ village with a place of trial and a market.

The church consists of a heightened nave and two side aisles that might have been built well before 1314, and that was rebuilt from 1886 to 1888.

The organ with a prospect in the baroque and roccoco styles was built by the organ maker Christian Heinrich Kersten from Rostock in 1784, on order of The Duke Friedrich. In 1786 it was decorated by the painter Gudehus from Verden.

In the southern side aisle there is a poniard and a trumpet on an epitaph with the inscription: “In memory of Elisabeth Blanchert Jacob Hinzen 1677”.

The church register provides more information about the trumpet player Jacob Hintze.
